What water actually does to a board

Wood takes on moisture unevenly. Water sitting on top or wicking from the subfloor swells the bottom of each board faster than the finished face, and the board rolls up at its edges, which is cupping. If that swollen wood is sanded flat before it releases the moisture, the surface goes concave in the other direction as it dries and the floor crowns. Adhesive-set floors can also release from the substrate, and engineered products can delaminate at the wear layer. None of that is visible in hour one. It is the reason a floor is metered rather than judged by eye, and the reason drying starts before anyone decides whether the floor is a loss.

Where the water is hiding

On a slab house the moisture is usually beneath the flooring, either in the adhesive layer or in the concrete itself, and concrete releases water slowly. On a pier and beam or framed floor, the wet zone includes the subfloor, the joists, and often the space below. Readings are taken through the board face and the subfloor where access allows, and a pin meter on an inconspicuous edge gives a real number instead of an impression. Baseboard, shoe molding, and the bottom plate along the affected wall are metered as well, because water that wicked into the wall base will keep feeding the floor edge for days.

Specialty drying beats more fans

Water bound inside dense material does not leave because air is blowing across the surface. Hardwood, plywood subfloor, and concrete give moisture up slowly, and the industry treats them as a separate drying problem from carpet and drywall. That is where floor drying mats, negative-pressure systems that pull moisture up through the board assembly, and tightly managed dehumidification earn their keep. The target is to remove water from the assembly faster than the boards can deform, without dropping the surrounding air so low that the top of the board dries and shrinks while the bottom stays wet. Aggressive is not the same as fast here.

Humidity is the control variable, not the fan count

The Environmental Protection Agency's moisture guidance sets a practical range for indoor conditions: below 60 percent relative humidity, and preferably between 30 and 50 percent. For wood, that range is not just a mold threshold, it is a dimensional stability question, since the board is trying to reach equilibrium with whatever air surrounds it. Containment, closed windows, and functioning air conditioning are part of the plan, and a hygrometer in the room is worth more than an extra air mover.

A 5,600-foot tunnel now moves Waller Creek floodwater downtown

The City of Austin describes the Waller Creek tunnel as roughly 5,600 feet long, 22 to 26 feet in diameter and sitting about 70 feet below the surface, carrying floodwater to Lady Bird Lake and cutting flood risk between 12th Street and the lake. Its second phase, The Confluence, started construction in spring 2023 and opens June 6, 2026.
