Bonded urethane pad in particular holds water like a sponge and gives it up slowly, and in most losses the honest choice is to remove the pad and dry the carpet in place, or to float the carpet on air while the subfloor dries beneath it. Extraction over the pad, repeated until the water table drops, is the technique that keeps a carpet's warranty alive when the material is worth saving. Deciding that on readings rather than on preference is the whole skill.
Water that started at a supply line becomes something else as it sits, mixes with soils in the carpet, and warms. That is why the same carpet is salvageable on hour four and a disposal item on hour sixty. Where the water was contaminated to begin with, from a drain, a sewer line, or the street, the pad and usually the carpet come out regardless of how good they look. There is no reliable way to restore a contaminated cushion in place, and the cost of trying it is a call-back with a smell nobody can locate.

A single wet room with clean water, caught early, pad removed, and equipment sized correctly is typically a three-day dry with readings taken daily. Add a second and third room, wet wall bases, or a slab and the timeline stretches. Add contamination and it becomes a removal job first with drying after. What does not happen is a same-day finish. Equipment picked up early, before readings say the subfloor and plates are dry, is the single most common cause of a musty room a month later, and the second job is never cheaper than finishing the first one.
Confirm the source is stopped, then extract from the carpet face and through the pad as the technique requires. Pull and dispose of pad where the water or the material says it goes, and detach and float the carpet where the subfloor needs air under it. Meter the carpet, pad, subfloor, tack strip line, wall base, and adjacent rooms, and record the affected square footage with photographs. Size dehumidification to the wet surface, log readings each visit, and reinstall or replace pad only after the substrate hits target. Keep the invoices, including the plumbing repair, in one file.
